Official WotLK page

My love of WoW at the moment is on something of a rollercoaster; some days I’m adoring it, some days I want to throw my PC out of the window through boredom and frustration. There’s the new patch coming before WotLK that actually contains some of the things that were supposed to be included in Lich King, like Inscription profession and barber shops and all that which is a bit odd. PTR patch notes are at the official site here

Evil Penguin! No, wait…

June 27, 2008

The Blizzard plash screen conundrum continues with todays image showing a pair of eyes and 5 runes, 2 of which I’m not sure what they mean.

and this is hidden in the CSS

What the hell? I suppose we’ll find out tomorrow.

What I did on Warcraft last night

June 27, 2008

This is starting to become a regular thing. Thinking about my time on Warcraft last night, the morning after. You can tell when a game gets under your skin!!!

As I was thinking about blogging this, I was also wondering who would be interested. And I’m not sure really. Most of the guys here at Playtime who would be interested in Warcraft are already hooked. So who wants to know about a Noob. But then I thought (perhaps deludedly) that the views of a newbie are important to publishers – they need to know what people like and dislike if they are to improve it for future gamers. Mmmmm. Tenuous I know but hey.

So first thoughts – well I played last night for about an hour – did a couple of quests. And here was my first thought – there doesn’t seem to be a way to record the quests you have done. What did you do last night in Warcraft? Well, I got some wine for a woman (cant remember her name), I went into a mine (cant remember the name of it) to kill some walking rats (can’t remember what they are called) and then I got the head of this bloke who was running the local thugs near Northshire Abbey (guess what – I can’t remember his name either).

Can you see the pattern here? The quests are good because they are reasonably quick and rewarding but when you have done a few, they quickly melt into one. Is there a way of recording what you have done? I dunno – the guys in the office (Level 70 charactors) dunno either. Maybe you dont need it as the game progresses – but it was just a thought.

Also, I got to level 6 and the local Captain (can’t remember his name either – update: Glen just Googled it – his name is Marshall McBride) gives me my first quest that involves going outside of the local area. OK – so WOW is telling me its time to move on. But how do I know if I have done all the quests in this area. Personally, I am a bit of a completist!!! I like to know I have done everything in a level before moving to the next one – whatever the game is. But short of walking around forever, I cant see a quick way of identifying whether I have done everything.

Only slight gripes really I know but otherwise this blog entry would just turn into me carping on about how much fun WOW is and telling everyone – I got to level X last night.

Drunken World of Warcraft

June 26, 2008

So I played a bit of Warcraft last night, just for an hour or so, whilst my wife Nikki watched Big Brother.

I levelled up to level 5 with a couple of quests around Northshire Abbey and generally enjoyed it.

It is not without its frustrations though. I ended up getting a Militia Quarterstaff as a reward for my last quest. I took it because looking at all the rewards for my quest, it seemed the most powerful – logical. As soon as I get it, it turns out I cant even use it – I dont have the abilities. What is the point of that??? Give me something I can hit people with now!!!!

Also, I have installed WOW on my laptop (see previous post for explanation) and so I play it without a mouse on the trackpad, balanced on my lap with a beer or a glass of wine on the go. That is probably as much a source of my problems to date as anything else. If you give anything your undivided attention, you will get the most out of it. For me, this is a bit of a distraction. Having said that, I am starting to see why people get addicted to it.

I need to keep an eye on that……

WOW update

June 25, 2008

I have finally got it working….

And I am starting to see what the appeal is.

I was getting frustrated when I started because I didnt understand the concept of quests. Last night, I had wondered around for 10 mins just looking around and wondering what the appeal was. I then started trying to kill a wolf or two but kept dying and couldnt understand what the point was. Talking to Glen in the office this morning, it turns out my wonderings had taken me away from the starter area for my character which means a wolf would easily kill me. And all my dying and resurrecting had worn out all my equipment. Apparently going to Goldshire as a level 2 character is not a good thing to do.

So based on Glens advice, I went back to Northshire Abbey – the start-point for my human warrior and started again. This time I talked to characters and got some quests – and did them nearby!!!! And Lord behold – it’s quite compelling.

I am a Human Warriar called Sambam on the Arathor Realm. And in the space of 30 mins over lunch (with Glen showing me what I was going wrong) I levelled up to level 4. Cool. If you see me wondering around, please say hello.

Glen in the office has offered to send me some gold when he gets home – a nice gesture, but I want to do this myself and see how I get on.

My favourite thing so far – /dance. I might get round to posted a video of that but I suppose there are loads on Youtube.

WoW/Starcraft II/Diablo 3 non-event news story!! Absolutely nothing to see here! Or is there…

June 25, 2008

So, the front ends of and have been updated every day with the same image in slightly different states of revelation on the run-up to the World Of Warcraft Invitational in Paris this weekend. Now is it a general announcement of games? Is it the WotLK release date? Maybe the proper trailer after the rubbish in game tripe we had last year.
Or..could it be….dare we hope…Diablo 3?

The evidence, m’lud!

Exhibit a

Exhibit b

Exhibit c

Now. The fanboy community has been working overtime trying to decipher what the buggery is going on, but noone can decide on what it is. The runes in the ice apparently relate to Diablo 2, Starcraft and presumably WoW so it could be an overall thing, or red herrings abound. Personally I’m hoping that Hell has frozen over and it’s Diablo 3. I suppose more will be revealed tomorrow.

I just cannot get onto WOW

June 22, 2008

I don’t know what it is – perhaps they don’t want my money???? But it has taken me nearly a week to get everything into place to start playing Warcraft and when I finally get the time to do so, the servers are too busy to let me in and manage my account.

As I type this at 7.50pm on Sunday evening, the WOW homepage at is timing out.

I sometimes think that my plans to avoid having to watch Big Brother are too far fetched and I will just have to suffer three months of Mario prancing around telling everybody how cool he is……..
